Parent of the Year

Over at Parents Behaving Badly, the Zero Boss put together his nominations for Worst Parent of 2006. There are some quality contestants in there, but I’d like to nominate the parent of this child in Hebron, the West Bank, who came out to greet an Israeli army patrol this morning with a realistic-looking toy gun:

I imagine the conversation this morning at the boy’s breakfast table went something like this:

Father: Mahmoud, what would you like to do today?
Son: I don’t know, father. I was thinking perhaps to play soccer with my friends.
Father: I’ve got a better idea! Here, take this real-looking plastic semi-automatic weapon and sit outside until an army patrol comes by. When they do, hold the gun in an offensive position, so it looks like you’re going to shoot at the soldiers. It will be so much fun! I can’t wait to see the looks on their faces.
Son: OK, father, but what if they shoot me?
Father: imshalla.

  1. This is hilarious!

But on a serious note, have you seen “Blood Diamond?” That movie takes a hard stance against the brutal indoctrination of young boys into rebel armies. The word “infantry” comes from this practice, though most don’t realize it.
